Venture studios have an inherited habit of describing everything they have touched as a portfolio. It reads well and it is usually not true.
There is a real difference between a product we own, a venture we co-built with its founders, a company we operate alongside, a build delivered for a client, and a separate organisation we work with on impact programmes. Collapsing those into one grid of logos makes the studio look larger and makes every individual claim weaker.
So every venture and every piece of selected work on this site carries an explicit relationship label. The label describes Afrifounders' actual relationship to the organisation named — nothing more.
- Afrifounders Product — built and operated inside the group.
- Studio Venture — originated and built by the Studio.
- Co-Built Venture — built together with founders or an organisation that brought the insight or the asset.
- Product & Operating Partner — we contribute build and operating capacity; we do not own the company.
- Selected Client Work — a scoped engagement, published only where the client has approved public use.
- Impact Partner — a separate organisation we work with, never an owned commercial venture.
Building, operating or supporting a company does not imply ownership, equity, investment or control.
The same rule applies to numbers
We publish a figure only when we can name the venture, the measurement window and the person who signed it off. Until then the space stays empty rather than filled with a number that sounds right. That is why you will not find an aggregate product count, a portfolio size or a community membership figure anywhere on this site.
It is a slower way to build a case. It is also the only version of a case that survives a serious conversation with a founder, an operator or an investor who checks.
